Forecast discussion: An area of high pressure south of New England has been giving Providence pleasant weather throughout the week. However, all good things must come to an end, as this high will begin to move further into the Atlantic. A cold front will be passing through on Sunday, bringing some showers and periods of rain on the first day of autumn.
However, we will end summer with some dry weather. Although we will see increasing clouds throughout the day, it will remain mostly dry. A passing shower is possible, especially during the mid to late afternoon. As the front moves into New England, we will see heavier rainfall during the overnight hours, and into Sunday morning. The front will move offshore by the afternoon, but a widely isolated shower remains possible. Skies will clear after midnight Sunday as a new high pressure system controls our weather pattern.
This high will dominate the weather pattern for much of the eastern U.S. over most of next week. The high will slowly drift off to the southeast, allowing temperatures to slowly rise. We will see temperatures in the upper 60’s Monday through Wednesday. But, with winds turning more to the southwest, temperatures will slowly climb into the lower 70’s by Thursday.
Meanwhile, the tropics have become quiet. With Humberto dissipating yesterday, there is only one main area being watched by the National Hurricane Center. However, Invest 95-L has become less defined, so no development is expected. The only other area being watched is about 450 miles south-southeast of Bermuda. However, computer models feel it may not reach a stage of becoming a tropical depression before the low merges with the cold front.
