Forecast discussion: High pressure off the Jersey shoreline gave Providence another beautiful late summer day. This high will continue to control our weather pattern right into the first half of the weekend. We will see bright sunshine and warmer temperatures, as highs reach the upper 70’s.
As we head into Saturday, we will see increasing clouds through the mid-afternoon and into the evening. There may be an isolated shower around 10 p.m. Saturday night, as a cold front now passing through Iowa brings some showers and light rain for all day Sunday. It appears the cold front will also take a developing low pressure system in the Atlantic out to sea, keeping it away from the east coast. We may see some limited sunshine early on Monday, but a high pressure ridge will build into the region by Monday evening. The high will keep any storm systems away from New England right into next Thursday. Temperatures will slowly increase from the upper 60’s to the lower 70’s during the extended period.
In the tropics, we have seen the last of Humberto. At 5 p.m. EDT, Humberto was centered at 33.6N 42.0W, or about 895 miles west-southwest of the Azores. Maximum sustained winds were at 35 mph, and was moving east at 9 mph. The low pressure system mentioned above has absorbed Humberto, which is why the National Hurricane Center put out its last advisory at 5 p.m. EDT.
Meanwhile, an area of thunderstorms remains about 150 miles east of Tuxpan, Mexico. This area was titled Invest 95-L by the National Hurricane Center. There is still a 50 percent chance this area becomes a tropical cyclone within the next 5 days.
