Forecast discussion: A strong high pressure system east of Tennessee brought the warmest high temperature of the week to Providence on Wednesday. The thermometer reached 81 degrees in the capital city, making it feel more like late May than early October. Temperatures will begin to subside as we move through the rest of the week.
A weak cold front will pass through the Northeast this evening, although no precipitation is expected. But, we will see increasing clouds tomorrow night, as a warm front brings a few showers by late Friday morning. The boundary will eventually dissipate, and showers will come to an end by Saturday afternoon. We will mostly cloudy skies after Saturday afternoon, as moisture in the atmosphere remains around the region. A new cold front will bring some showers and periods of rain by Monday. I am expecting some heavier rainfall Monday night into Tuesday morning, due to an investigative area that could become a tropical cyclone. The remnant low of this cyclone will move through New England, bringing heavier precipitation.
A strong high pressure system will eventually help clear our skies Tuesday afternoon, with mostly sunny weather for next Wednesday. However, temperatures will return back to seasonable conditions, with highs in the upper 60’s to lower 70’s.

Maximum sustained winds were at 40 mph around the center, and Jerry was moving northeast at 7 mph. The current forecast for Jerry is for the tropical to continue moving to the northeast, and slowly weakening within the next 5 days as a remnant low. It poses no threat to any mainland or islands.
Meanwhile, Invest 97-L is being watched by hurricane hunter aircraft. It does not have a true center of circulation, but it is creating tropical storm winds. It has a 70 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within 48 hours. The system will then move into the northern Gulf of Mexico by Saturday or Sunday.
