Providence weather forecast for Jan. 9, 2013 (Photos)

Forecast discussion: After several days of cold weather, Tuesday felt a little different in Providence. Warmer air from the south moved into New England, allowing our high temperature to reach about 10 degrees above normal this afternoon. This milder weather will continue for the next several days.

A very strong high pressure system remains off in the Atlantic, allowing our winds to come from the southwest, which is a warm wind direction. The high will remain quasi-stationary for the next few days, so we will see temperatures in the middle to upper 40’s in the state of Rhode Island. We will begin to see some moisture move in late on Friday, thanks in part to a frontal boundary to our south. Although temperatures will be a little cooler on Friday, temperatures will still be about five degrees above normal for this time of the year.

As we move into the weekend, we will see some leftover showers Saturday morning, before they taper off during the afternoon. Temperatures will remain mild for the football game at Foxboro next Sunday. A frontal boundary along the eastern coast may bring some scattered showers to the state to begin the next workweek. However, the models are in disagreement with the position of the boundary, with the European model keeping the area of low pressure further offshore. However the American model has been consistent in keeping some showers in the forecast for next Monday after back to back model runs.
