Forecast discussion: After having several days of very cold temperatures, Southern New England will begin to see a thawing period during the daytime hours. This mild weather will continue through much of the week.
Right now, a strong area of high pressure will remain off the east coast for the next few days. This will allow our winds to turn to the southwest and west-southwest, letting warmer air filter back into the region. A cold front will pass through as a warm front tomorrow, allowing temperatures to increase to the middle to upper 40’s. This is well above average for early January, as Providence usually sees a high temperature of 37 degrees.
We will begin to see some moisture move in on Thursday evening, in advance of a cold front in the western Rockies. We will see some showers and light rain throughout Friday, before skies begin to clear for Saturday.
The computer models do agree that a cold front will be moving through the Northeast on Sunday. However, the models disagree on how much precipitation will be with the front. The American model keeps any rainfall more to our south, along the coastline. The European model gives the entire state scattered showers Sunday morning. For now, I will give the entire state scattered showers, as we will have a southwest flow in the jet stream, allowing for some moisture to move into the Northeast. We will see lingering clouds next Monday, with the chance of some evening showers.
