Forecast discussion: Well, it was certainly warmer than the last few days in Rhode Island today. But, we will not see above normal temperatures until Tuesday. So, we still have to get through a couple more cold days before we see a January thaw.
Also, we will be seeing a little light snow this evening into early Saturday morning. The weak low is forming offshore of the Delmarva Peninsula. It is bringing some snow showers to the southern part of the state at the moment. The light snow should move into northern Rhode Island by about 10 p.m. The heavier snow will remain offshore, so we are just going to see a coating to an inch by tomorrow morning.
We will see warmer temperatures during the evening hours, as they actually stay in the lower teens. We will finally see our high temperatures go above freezing on Monday. But, we will have to still with some wintry precipitation Monday evening.
A low pressure system will develop in the central U.S. on Sunday. The low will move in a northeast direction, with the precipitation ahead of the low’s center. Despite our warmer temperatures, we will see a combination of rain, sleet, and freezing rain by Monday afternoon. However, a warm front will be moving south of Southern New England Monday night into early Tuesday morning. So, we will see a wintry mix during the overnight hours, but temperatures will actually be rising. So, the precipitation will change to rain before sunrise. Any rain showers will end by the late morning on Tuesday, as temperatures soar into the lower 40’s.
The warm front will linger to our south into Wednesday, but will move through Wednesday night. The front will help trigger some showers Wednesday night, but the precipitation should remain as rain, despite the colder temperatures into Thursday morning. High pressure will slowly build into the eastern U.S. on Thursday afternoon, and will give us drier weather on Friday. However, a cold front will push through on Friday afternoon, with more arctic air returning to the Northeast U.S. Right now, the American model continues to push a second low into the area next Friday, bringing heavy rain, before changing to some possible snow showers Friday night. However, the European and United Kingdom models only have cloudy skies over us. So, for now, I will keep us dry. But, my confidence after Thursday’s forecast remains quite low.

Tonight: Light snow will begin around 10 p.m. in Providence, before ending around sunrise. We will see a low of 14, with a coating to an inch throughout the state.
Saturday: Breezy, with mostly sunny skies by the early afternoon. We will see a high of 25 with north-northwest winds at 10-13 mph.
Saturday night: Partly cloudy with a low of 13. Winds will come from the northwest at 7-10 mph.
Sunday: Mostly sunny with diminishing winds and a high of 28.
Sunday night: Mostly cloudy with a low of 14.
Monday: Mostly cloudy with a mix of rain, sleet, and freezing rain in the early afternoon and a high of 38.
Monday night: Sleet and freezing rain changing to rain showers before sunrise with a low of 29.
Extended Forecast:
Tuesday: Rain showers end in the morning, but remaining mostly cloudy. Highs 41-44, lows 33-36.
Wednesday: Scattered rain showers in the evening. Highs 45-48, lows 30-33.
Thursday: Showers end in the morning, and becoming mostly sunny. Highs 38-41, lows 22-25.
