Forecast discussion: We will be seeing the passing of an occluded front this evening through Rhode Island, around midnight. If you have not heard of an occluded front, it is when colder air catches up to warmer air and overruns it. The front will be dry, as there is only enough moisture for the low clouds that remained in the sky Wednesday afternoon. After the front passes, drier air will move in from behind, and we will see blue skies for Thursday.
Temperatures will continue to stay well above normal. This is due to an upper level ridge over the eastern U.S. This is allowing for tropical air to remain further north than normal. The pattern will not change over the next several days. Our high temperatures will remain in the middle 40’s for the next few days. As we move into Thursday evening, a cold front coming down from central Canada will provide us with some scattered showers by Friday afternoon. The shower activity will remain through Friday night, before slowly tapering off on Saturday afternoon. Some milder air will come in for the weekend, as high temperatures are expected to reach the lower 50’s.
A stronger high pressure system remaining in the Rockies will help bring back some sunshine by Sunday, but we will begin to see some cooler air return to the Northeast U.S. The upper level ridge will begin to weaken, as a long wave trough in the central U.S. digs further south. This will help keep a weak frontal boundary over New England for Tuesday and part of Wednesday. This boundary will help create some possible showers on Tuesday, before a strong high pressure ridge brings mostly sunny skies for next Wednesday.
