Forecast discussion: High pressure gave Providence a lovely sunny day, with mild temperatures. This helped melt more snow around the northern part of the state. However, the computer models are beginning to suggest we could add to that snow pile during the weekend.
As we move into tomorrow, a low pressure system in the eastern Great Lakes will move into Northern New England. We will not see any precipitation, but more clouds than sunshine is expected. We will also see extremely mild temperatures, as highs could reach 50 degrees in some parts of the state. Mostly cloudy skies will remain as we enter Friday night.
Over the last few days, the computer models have been going back and forth with a developing low pressure system off the east coast. Earlier in the week, the models were forecasting some light snowfall amounts. By Tuesday, the models agreed to push the low out to sea, giving us a dry weekend. Unfortunately, the models are now beginning to bring the low closer to land. This means we will now be seeing some light snow for Saturday. But, will the models continue to agree by the new model runs tomorrow?
At this time, the models are showing some consistency in light to moderate snowfall. We will see enough snowfall that we will have to pull the shovels out again, and the snowplows may need to be back on the road. But, it will be nothing like last weekend’s blizzard. If I had to put some accumulations down, I would say about 2-4 inches, with the most being near the coastline. However, this can change greatly, especially if the low’s track brings it back towards the west. I should know by tomorrow afternoon, as I get to see the latest model runs.
Based on the current forecast, we will see some leftover snow showers Sunday morning. We should see some sunshine by the afternoon. But, it will be colder, as daytime highs struggle to reach 30 degrees, and strong winds will make wind chills make it feel like the single digits.
We will see some warmer air by Tuesday, but another low pressure system will be coming through by the afternoon. The precipitation should start off as rainfall, with the chance of becoming snow showers Tuesday evening. Snow showers would end by Wednesday morning.
