Forecast discussion: I hope all of my readers had a Merry Christmas on Wednesday. Some of us will have the rest of the week off, and we will run into one day of precipitation. The weekend looks rather dry, although there is the chance for some precipitation Sunday afternoon.
Right now, we had a beautiful Christmas Day in Providence thanks to an area of high pressure. However, the high will be moving offshore this evening, as we await a fast moving low pressure system. A front is just over central New York at the moment, which will bring increasing clouds tonight. As the low’s center moves through on Thursday, we will see precipitation start as some snow showers by mid-morning. However, temperatures will be creeping above freezing through the day. So, the snow showers will become a mix of rain and snow showers by the early afternoon. It is possible that those above I-295 will remain as snow showers. We will hardly see any snowfall, with maybe a coating by the time we changeover.
From there, milder temperatures are expected for the first two-thirds of the weekend. Temperatures will warm into the lower 40’s on Saturday. By Sunday, I will be watching the models very carefully. Both the European, American, and United Kingdom models all show a low developing over Georgia on late Saturday. This low will meet with another low coming from the Great Lakes. Right now, it looks like we could see some rain showers by Sunday afternoon, and continue into Monday morning. We may even see a mixture of rain and snow showers, before the precipitation ends by Monday evening. However, a rush of cold air is expected to begin Sunday night. So, we will have to see if this system brings the potential for some decent snowfall.
It will be dry for New Years’ Eve, and dry and cold weather is expected if you happen to be outside at midnight for the beginnings of 2014. There is the chance for snow showers Wednesday morning, before ending in the evening.
