Forecast discussion: A strong high pressure system has been giving Providence mostly dry weather for nearly a week. The only precipitation we have seen was on late Monday afternoon, when a weak low pressure system brought some raindrops to the state. On Tuesday, we returned to summer like temperatures, as T.F. Green Airport reached 86 degrees today. We will have a couple more days of nearly hot weather, before we will see the chance at some more precipitation.
The high pressure system has helped create southwest winds, allowing us to be stuck with a land breeze. With no winds coming off the ocean or bays, temperatures have been able to increase. For Wednesday, high temperatures will reach 90 degrees in some areas. By Thursday, a cold front from Canada will come through, helping to create some scattered showers and thunderstorms late in the afternoon. This activity will move offshore by Friday morning, with clearing skies through the afternoon.
As we head into the weekend, the temperatures will be slightly below to normal for this time in August. The next chance for any precipitation will be by Tuesday afternoon. A weak area of low pressure to our west will help bring some moisture over Southern New England. There may be some showers and possible thunderstorms ahead of the system. Right now, the European model suggests we may see the shower activity more in the early to mid-morning on Tuesday. However, it appears the European model has the system moving too quickly eastward. For now, we will keep showers arriving until sometime during the evening commute.
