Forecast discussion: Despite a strong high pressure system to our west, a weak low pressure system off of Long Island brought cloudy skies and a few isolated showers across the Rhode Island, especially in the late afternoon. However, this low will move into the Atlantic by early Monday morning. Summer weather returns to Providence by Tuesday.
Winds will begin to turn and come from the west-southwest. This is usually a warm wind, and it remains a land breeze. Also, it will help bring back some tropical air, as the southwest winds come all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. This will also help to increase our high temperatures, and we will return to the day dogs of August. Some areas may even see 90 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday.
By Thursday, a cold front will come in from the Great Lakes by the afternoon, helping to create some showers and thunderstorms into Friday morning. A new high pressure system will bring drier, cooler air for the weekend, as temperatures remain in the lower 80’s. A new cold front is forecast to bring another round of showers and thunderstorms by Sunday night.
Meanwhile, the Atlantic becomes quieter tonight. As of 5 p.m. EDT, Erin became a Post-Tropical Cyclone. The last position for the center was 20.4N 39.8W, or about 1080 miles west-northwest of the Cape Verde Islands. The system will remain a remnant low before finally dissipating completely by Wednesday afternoon. There will be no more advisories on Erin.
