Forecast discussion: A weak disturbance passing into the Northeast U.S. brought a few showers during the early morning in Providence, before seeing cloudy skies by the late morning. Here in Pawtucket, some sunshine made its way out before sunset. As we head into this evening, the disturbance may create an isolated shower, before we see drier air move in during Saturday morning.
As we progress through Saturday, drier air from Canada will begin to filter down into Southern New England. This will be due to a high pressure system passing Newfoundland this evening. The high will slowly move to the east, which will allow for winds to slowly turn from the east and to the southwest. This will help bring in some very tropical air from the Southeast, which is bringing dangerous high temperatures to that part of the country.
Now, we will not see a heat wave, but temperatures will finally get above 80 degrees, starting by Monday. As most of Rhode Island’s kids head back to school Tuesday and Wednesday, it will be sunny and very warm. By Thursday, we will begin to see some increasing clouds during Thursday evening. This will be due to a cold front approaching from the west. The forecast calls for showers starting around midnight, and going through the day on Friday. But, the front will move offshore by Friday evening, giving us drier air for the following weekend. However, temperatures will cool to seasonable conditions for the last full week of August.
Meanwhile, the tropics may become active as early as this evening. There is an 80% chance the system moving north of Puerto Rico will become a tropical system within 48 hours. Favorable environmental conditions will improve as the system reaches east of the Bahamas on Saturday. The spaghetti models are showing the track for the system to curve away from the United States by early next week. I will continue to watch the system, and give you the latest information tomorrow night.
