Forecast discussion: Monday in Providence was one of those days you want to save in a bottle. Temperatures reached 82 degrees at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick today. Unfortunately, for the next few days, we will be seeing grey skies and much cooler temperatures.
The reason for the drastic temperature change will be a back door cold front. Typically, cold fronts come either from the west, and helping to move other weather systems. This type of front is actually coming down from Northern New England, and then from the east. Also, with the winds shifting to the east, this will help bring winds off the cooler ocean waters. Although our dewpoints will be relatively low, the air will become more humid over the next few days. So, temperatures over the next few days will struggle to reach the lower 60’s.
For Tuesday, there is the slight chance for an isolated shower, with a slightly increased chance for some passing showers on Wednesday. A new cold front in the middle of the country right now will help bring the increased risk for showers on Thursday. As the front reaches the east coast, a new low pressure center will form in the Southeast U.S. along the front. This low will help bring more moisture, along with some upper level dynamics. By Friday night, we will be seeing some heavy rainfall and some scattered thunderstorms Friday night into Saturday morning. As the cold front moves offshore, rainfall will taper off, and end by early Saturday evening.
The dewpoint temperatures will also decrease, allowing for some drier air to move over the region by the weekend. We will see partly to mostly sunny skies to start early next week, but high temperatures will remain in the upper 60’s.
