Forecast discussion: Over the last few days, Providence has been seeing a tug of war between two weather features. We began Monday with bright sunshine, thanks to high pressure over the eastern U.S. But, by the afternoon, a low pressure system off the Gulf of Maine brings clouds and showers by the afternoon. This will be the pattern for Tuesday as well.
We will see sunny skies and warmer temperatures despite winds coming from the north. However, by the afternoon as we much the maximum daytime heating, the low will bring clouds down into Southern New England, and help create some isolated showers by the middle of the afternoon. Once the sun goes down for the night, we will lose the daytime heating, and the clouds will once again dissipate.
As we head into Wednesday, the low will move offshore, but only to be replaced with a low coming from the Great Lakes. The low will become stationary over eastern New York by late Wednesday afternoon. We will begin to see scattered showers by the middle of the evening commute, before a second low following along the cold front brings heavier rain for Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Once the low moves out to sea, the first low will then slowly push east. The low will bring isolated showers on Friday.
You will also notice that an upper level low just offshore will bring down some very cold air for this time of the year. High temperatures on Thursday will try to make it to 60 degrees. Temperatures will only warm up a couple of degrees on Friday. The surface low will finally move out to sea by Saturday morning. But, some leftover moisture over the region could help produce a couple of scattered showers through the day.
By the time we reach early next week, the weather will improve for the rest of the holiday weekend. Temperatures will rise into the lower 70’s on Sunday under mostly sunny skies, with temperatures reaching the middle 70’s on Monday.
