Providence weather: A gorgeous Memorial Day

Forecast discussion: Well, it turned out to be a delightful Sunday in Rhode Island. High pressure over West Virginia brought us bright sunshine by noon, and it stayed beautiful the rest of the day. However, if you scheduled your cookout for tomorrow, you saved it for the best day of the weekend.

That high will continue to control the weather pattern for tomorrow. It will be warmer, but we will see strong winds coming from the west. The ridge will slowly begin to break down by tomorrow night, as we will see increasing clouds. A back door cold front from Northern New England will bring a round of showers by tomorrow night. We will see some limited sunshine on Tuesday, but a cold front over the Dakotas will bring heavier precipitation for Tuesday afternoon. The front will slowly move offshore by early Wednesday morning.

After the front passes, the temperatures will feel more like early April then the end of June. Colder air from Canada will stay over New England for Wednesday and Thursday. We will see high pressure give us mostly sunny skies. Despite the sunshine, temperatures will only be in the lower 60’s on Wednesday, and then increase to the upper 60’s on Thursday.

As we head into the weekend, we will begin with limited sunshine on Friday, but a weak disturbance will bring some scattered showers by Friday evening, and continue into Saturday afternoon. A new high pressure system will bring mostly sunny skies for next Sunday. However, the colder temperatures will remain, as high temperatures only reach the upper 60’s to lower 70’s in the extended forecast.
