On Sunday October 2, 2011, protesters gathered outside of the Capitol building in Denver to gather support against Syria’s leadership. Protests in Syria began in March and since then over 2700 people have been murdered by the Syrian government. President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, who is responsible for Syria’s military, claims that the violence is not his fault and that he is part of a “foreign conspiracy.”
Amidst signs stating, “Free Syria,” “Stop Killing,” “Down with Assad,” and “Killing is Against Humanity,” one participant by the name of Obeid Kaifo stated, “The people in Syria need support, we are fortunate that we can protest in America. If this was Syria we would have already been shot by now.”
One protester explained that Syria is being ignored by the UN because they lack the same amount of natural resources that Libya contains. During the interview irony ensued when a white limo pulled over, rolled its window down and a young woman yelled, “No one cares.” People do care though and support for the people of Syria is growing. There is going to be another protest at the Denver Capitol building October 5, 2011.
