Ingrained in the heart of Long Island’s historic ‘Gold Coast’ in Kings Island is United States Merchant Marine Academy yielding an impressive view of New York City.
The north shore of Long Island along its northern coast has earned the nickname of the ‘Gold Coast’ due to the private estates of prominent millionaires. It’s one of five United States service academies, known as Kings Point or USMMA.
The academy is home to the American Merchant Marine Museum. Its mission is communicating the role American merchant maritime plays. Its use of imaginative exhibits illuminates their important calling. Ship models, nautical artifacts and marine art are exhibited. The 176-foot vessel Kings Pointer is used for regular training missions all year.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy also houses the National Hall of Fame. It honors people and ships important to the countries waterways. Every year ships and individuals are selected to be inducted into the National Hall of Fame.
United States Merchant Marine Academy is located on Long Island 27 miles north east of New York City at Kings Point. The public institution was founded in 1943, with academic programs leading to a college degree. Its purpose is training officers for United States Merchant Marine, branches of the military or the commercial transportation industry.
Its undergraduate enrollment of 987 is on their 82-acre campus, in a trimester based academic calendar. It has been rated #3 in 2014 US News Best Colleges of regional colleges. The Academy grounds, museum and Navy Exchange are open to the general public. Tours may be arranged to enhance your visit.
Kings Point is a village on the North Shore of Long Island with a population of 5,005. The town of North Hempstead is 6 miles east of Kings Point with a population of 226,322, first settled in 1643. Queens County, NYC is to its west, and Long Island Sound north.
Connecticut is north of Long Island Sound with Long Island south. Major cities with more than 8 million people can be found along the sound. Historically the area has been rich in recreational and commercial fishing of many kinds of sea life. Recently there are signs of overfishing.

United States Merchant Marine Academy is a 6 hour drive of 334 miles from Rochester NY. Drive I-90 east to Syracuse then south on US 81 to Scranton. Then US 84 east then US 87 south, US 287 south, to US 80 east and US 95 into the Bronx. Then US 678 south into Queens and route 25A east to East Shore Road north to Steamboat Road.
