Pet owners living in the south need to protect their pets from possible cold snaps. Owners can sometimes forget how cold it can get during winter months, even in SW Florida!
Fort Myers has experienced some cold weather and continues to have it when least expected. Snow and ice has even been known to cover the ground as well.
Look up Record Cold Temperatures for a reminder of how cold it can really get it!
No matter what location one is in when it comes to winter, proper protection from the cold is very important. It can mean life or death for pets!
Even though Florida tends to have many months of warm temps, it can also get quite cold. It only takes one time, one night, one incident that a pet is affected by extreme cold.
Kittens and puppies can be exceptionally vulnerable, not to mention other critters, and humans, as well.
Pets need special attention and care. Since they (dogs) cannot sweat, extreme temperatures, like heat, can also be fatal.
Pet owners should not take it for granted that their pets are warm, especially if they live outside.
Here are tips for keeping pets warm from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
•Listen to weather forecasts.
•Check your emergency supplies.
•Have your chimney or flue inspected each year.
•Install a smoke detector and a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector. Test the batteries each month, and replace them twice a year.
•Weatherproof your home.
•Bring your pets indoors during the winter.
Keep your pets warm during a cold snap!
