Prostitutes in Brazil lining up for English classes for 2014 World Cup

According to The Sun on Jan. 9, prostitutes in Belo Horizonte, Brazil are lining up for free English classes. The ladies are getting ready for the 2014 World Cup games scheduled for June 12 through July 13, 2014.

The 2014 World Cup will draw a lot of foreign men so the ladies are not only soaking up English lessons, but Italian and Spanish lessons, as well. Many other workers are availing themselves of the free English classes, too. The ladies will be in class with politicians, construction workers, merchants and others in preparation for the influx of guests to the 2014 games.

Prostitution is a legal trade in Brazil. Cida Vieira, president of the Minas Gerais State Association of Prostitutes, talked about the important of the classes to the prostitutes.

“This is important for the dignity of the work, the women need to be able to negotiate a fair price and defend themselves. It will be important for the girls who will be able to use English to let their clients know what they are charging and learn about what turns them on."

Prostitutes are coming from as far away as Sao Paulo, about 316 miles away from Belo Horizonte, to take advantage of the free language classes.

According to Ms. Vieira, “When all this chatter about being ready for the World Cup started last year, we decided the women needed to be prepared for it too.”
