Prostate Cancer Foundation refuses donations from leaked celebrity nude photos

The Prostate Cancer Foundation refused a $6,000 donation from Reddit users yesterday, citing respect for others and upholding their own standards. Some Reddit users apparently hoped to curtail some of the controversy surrounding the release of nude photos of several celebrities onto the internet without their consent. Unfortunately, they did it in a vulgar and ridiculous manner.

The Reddit group known as “The Fappening” apparently thought it would be funny to make a masturbatory joke into a donation after publicly sexually harassing the actors. Even more galling is that they said they were doing it “in honor of Jennifer Lawrence.” It’s unclear whether the member of this group sincerely thought that this was actually a penitent act done out of remorse, or if they simply thought it would be funny.

For those who don’t know “Fapping” is slang for masturbating, and masturbation is widely believed to help prevent prostate cancer. Combining this with the nude photos of attractive starlets and you have the makings of a pretty funny joke. Only, no one is laughing when the people whose photos are being used in this manner aren’t in on the fun.

Prostate cancer affects some 80 percent of men who reach the age of 80. It’s a very serious disease and is the second most common cancer in American men after skin cancer. There are things that can be done to aid prevention, and research and medicines are becoming more common.

“A post appeared on Reddit late Monday afternoon, September 1, 2014. A Reddit user directed other Reddit users to make a donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation without the Foundation’s knowledge. We would never condone raising funds for cancer research in this manner. Out of respect for everyone involved and in keeping with our own standards, we are returning all donations that resulted from this post,” said the statement on the Foundation’s website.

Kudos to the foundation for refusing the money. It couldn’t have been easy, and that money may have helped research on this serious disease. Hopefully by doing the right thing even more awareness will be raised and the good people (read: not sexual predators) will donate even more than what they turned down.
