Hernandez, 24 had pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of his friend Odin Lloyd. Court documents filed last week are asking the courts to order the sheriff’s department to give them recordings of jailhouse calls and visits that Hernandez has received.

According to prosecutors, Hernandez was utilizing coded messages in communications with his friends. The codes messages were used as he talked about the accusations against him that he was the one who had planned the murder of Lloyd.

Odin Lloyd was shot to death on June 17, in an industrial park in North Attleborough, Massachusetts. Those communications include visits with his fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, and his cousin, Tanya Cummings Singleton. Both women are facing their own charges in connection with Lloyd’s murder.

In the court documents, Bristol Assistant District Attorney Roger L. Michel Jr. wrote, “Both of these co-defendants have been charged as accessories in the underlying offense of murder on the theory that they provided assistance to the defendant after the commission of that offense.”

The jailhouse phone conversations that Hernandez had discussed, “matters directly relevant to the circumstances surrounding the murder of Odin Lloyd; viz: the defendant’s subjective belief about his criminal liability; his use of coded messages to communicate with persons outside of jail; related prior offenses; inculpatory denials of ownership of a vehicle connected with the investigation; the extent of his control over persons charges as accessories; other matters relating to his codefendants, including their whereabouts and likely criminal liability”, Michel wrote.

According to authorities, on the night of the murder, Hernandez and two men picked up Lloyd from his apartment in Boston in a rental car. Shortly after, surveillance cameras captured the same rental car leaving the crime scene.

Minutes later, when Hernandez returned home, he was seen carrying a gun.
