Prosecution rests in Kelly Thomas case

The prosecution rested Dec. 11 in the Kelly Thomas case nearly a week and-a-half after starting.

"The people rest," were the final words spoken by Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas.

Former Fullerton police officers Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli currently stand trial at Orange County Superior Court in Santa Ana in the death of Kelly Thomas in July 2011. Ramos is charged with second degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Thomas. Cicinelli is charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault and battery by an officer.

The case ended with Cicinelli's attorney Michael Schwartz cross examining Dr. Michael Lekawa, Chief of the Division of Trauma at UCI Medical Center. Lekawa treated Thomas when he arrived at UCI's trauma center. He said that one of the main causes of Thomas's death was hypoxia, which lead to brain death.

Schwartz went through the transportation center video showing the encounter with Thomas and asked Lekawa to show where hypoxia was occurring. Cathy Thomas, Kelly's mother, sobbed as the video played.

Ron Thomas, Kelly's father, was surprised the prosecution ended its case.

"It seems like they've finished early. The trial's supposed to go until mid-January and they've rested already?"

The defense will begin calling witnesses Thursday.
