As we here in Nevada watch Governor Brian Sandoval submit a budget that will gut services for the poor, senior citizens, children, medical care, education, and Nevada’s future economy, our congressional leaders in the US Congress are also pushing to put Nevadans in danger with their proposed budget cuts.
And just as Governor Sandoval looks to lower taxes on businesses, so are those in Washington DC. In fact 2/3rds of America’s top 100 corporations already pay no taxes on the billions of dollars that they rake in. And many of those corporations receive millions and in some cases billions in tax returns or tax credits. Republicans expect all American workers, the unemployed and the poor to make up the lost revenue.
Here is just a sampling of what Washington politicians will be doing to Nevada if they get their budget cuts.:
- $12 million would be cut from federal funds for clean and safe water in Nevada.
- 479 Nevada children would be immediately cut from Head Start, which provides comprehensive early childhood development services for at-risk children ages zero to five.
- $19 million would be cut from Pell Grants, affecting all 33,000 higher education students with those grants in Nevada.
- Job training and employment services would be effectively eliminated for 1,000 dislocated workers, 4,900 low-income adults, and 1,100 youths age 14 to 21.4
- $1.6 million would be cut from law enforcement assistance, taking cops off the beat.
There was a time in the not so distant past when corporations were held accountable and paid their share of America’s tax burden, which was the American way, it wasn’t patriotic, it was the law. Just as you are required to pay your taxes on your income, so were corporations. Now, the republicans only expect you to pay taxes and think that because corporations create jobs they should not be required to pay taxes on their income.
Our National Security depends on a strong economy, and what the republican are doing is making America weaker and putting everyone in danger. The Republicans have embolden our enemies.
With the right wings new extremist ideology they are doing the bidding of terrorists. Our enemies can now just sit back and watch the republicans destroy America from within.
Everyone needs to call their elected official, both our State leaders and those that we have elected and sent off to Washington. Or you can just sit by and watch as they all attack American families here in Nevada and nationwide.
