The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to enter into a purchase agreement for property in Fullerton that will eventually become a year-round homeless shelter.
The property, located at 301 S. State College Blvd., will be used as a year-round shelter. The county will purchase the property for $3.15 million.
Chairman Shawn Nelson, whose district includes Fullerton, began the search for property for a year-round shelter a year ago, he said. Fullerton currently has an emergency shelter located on Brookhurst Rd.
Fullerton resident James Kubiak spoke against the proposed shelter. Since he will live near the proposed shelter, he was concerned about crime and said that he didn't know enough about the plans for the shelter.
"I'm against this location," Kubiak said. "I'd also like to see more transparency on this issue."
Nelson mentioned that he lived 3 doors down from The Armory for 10 years and never had a problem with crime due to living near the site.
Former city council member Pam Keller spoke at the meeting and mentioned the Homeless Collaborative that was formed 3 years ago to try and solve the growing issue of homelessness without using taxpayer dollars. The group tries to bring together churches and other nonprofit groups to help the homeless. Keller said she was "very supportive" of the proposed shelter.
"For anyone who says, 'not here,' I have one request-to finish with 'because here is a better location,' " Nelson said.
