PENN YAN, NY -- An iconic Finger Lakes winemaker will be the subject of a program at the First United Methodist Church here at 7 p.m. Friday (February 17).
John Barden, great grandson of Paul Garrett, will present the program on the man often known as the "dean of American winemakers."
Garrett, who lived in Penn Yan, operated the Empire Wine Company for many years. His family name also is known because of the Garrett Chapel on Bluff Point.
Garrett established his first winery, Garrett and Company, in North Carolina in 1900, and by 1903 owned five wineries there. He expanded into other states, and by 1913 owned vineyards and facilities in Canandaigua, Hammondsport and Penn Yan. He was the first winery executive to promote wine made from blending New York- and California-grown grapes.
Reservations should be made through the Yates County Genealogical & Historical Society by calling (315) 536-7318. A $5 donation is suggested.
