We all know her, or maybe we just wish we did. The girl who seems to just have it all together: not just in the style department, but with her life in general. She's sharp, quick, clever, witty, opinionated, accomplished, and philanthropic--and she does it all in killer shoes (did you get a look at that closet? To Die For). Why "the Best Girlfriend?" Because who wouldn't want to have a girlfriend like her--someone with her finger constantly on the pulse of what's happening, what's great, and what's next--but, most critically, someone who's willing to share the secrets of her style success? Presenting the latest Cleveland Beauty Examiner Profile in Style interview: Danielle Horvitz Weiner, sharing both her closet and her beauty secrets (don't you wish your best girlfriend had a shoe closet like that--and that you wore the same--tiny--shoe size!).
Hi, Danielle! Thank you so much for taking the time to dish on the secrets of your gorgeous style. Tell my readers a little bit about yourself!
I grew up in Moreland Hills and now live in Pepper Pike. I am a stay at home mommy to a baby girl and an Old English Sheepdog. I am involved in numerous non-profits in the Cleveland area and am very active with my college alma mater which keeps me very busy. I am a big exercise person in my downtime. I try to do something everyday. I really love power yoga and long walks-I also love to hike and take Barre class when I can. I love to read and a hot bath is my absolute favorite way to relax.
Tell us a little bit in general about your style (beauty and fashion). Who / what are your style influences? They could be anything--people you've known, celebrities, music, places, films, works of art…
My fashion style is pretty eclectic. One day I will be running around in yoga pants and my fit flops and the next evening I will be all dressed up. It really depends on my mood. When I am not in the mood to get “dressed” I tend to stick with skinny jeans or leggings and am pretty casual. For beauty during the day I like to look natural but pulled together. I have mastered the “no makeup” makeup look. I do love to get decked out when I am actually going somewhere. I tend to be more into designers than celebrities when it comes to who influences my style. I am really turned off by celebrities! I think Isabel Marant is fabulous and I really like how she is able to achieve that perfect Bohemian/Parisian-chic thing for daytime. I wear a ton of her stuff-I adored the paisley print she did for this season. I love the way a great jacket can transform a look. I have a ton of blazers-I really love Marant’s trophy jackets that she does every season. Givenchy blazers are amazing-they fit my body really well and look just as great with denim as they do over a cocktail dress or leather pants. Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, Oscar de la Renta, Alaia and Mary Katrantzou are some of my other favorite designers but I really just adore all fashion-the really good designers are artists to me. I try and only buy things that I would want someone to pass down to me one day-I buy what I love regardless of if it makes sense for my lifestyle. I am definitely a bit of a magpie-I am trying to be better but I have a history of buying for my fantasy life!
Do you feel like being from Cleveland has influenced your style in any way? If so, how?
Not really. Maybe I own more sweaters than I would like to!
How do you define "beauty"? What makes you feel beautiful? Think broadly about this question and feel free to answer it in any way that you'd like.
I think beauty is an attitude. I think confidence is beautiful! I love it when I see a woman rocking a look even if it is completely out there and being comfortable in her own skin. I am a fashion girl at heart so fabulous clothes of course make me feel beautiful. I also feel beautiful when I am active and exercising-I think putting in the time to take care of yourself is so important and really makes a difference in how you look and feel. Start young and make it a habit.
OK, let's talk a little bit about your beauty routine, starting with skincare. What is your am and pm skincare routine? What products do you use? This includes body care as well.
My beauty routine is extensive! In the morning I use Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser. I tone with Kiehls Calendula toner and follow that up with Skinceuticals CE Ferulic. I use Magnolia, Jasmine, and Lily Healing Emulsion by Chantecaille and Fresh Lotus eye gel. At night, I use an amazing French eye makeup remover called Bioderma Crealine and MAC makeup removing wipes. I cleanse with Darphin purifying foam gel with my Clarisonic Aria. On alternate nights I will exfoliate with Skinceuticals Micro-Exfoliating scrub. I tone with my Kiehls and then use Sunday Riley Good Genes treatment. I moisturize with Natura Bisse Diamond Cream and finally end with Fresh Lotus eye cream. Wow. It sounds so long when I put it in writing! I love Molton Brown’s saffron and patchouli body wash or Fresh Brown Sugar body wash. I adore the scrubs from Bliss...the minty one is amazing after a workout and I also use the Bliss Super Slough Scrub. I also love my Sara Happ lip scrub. For body moisturizer I use Embryolisse 24 Hour Miracle Cream or Aveeno. Aveeno also makes the best shaving gel. I am also a fan of Jergens Natural Glow in the lightest shade for summer. For sunscreen I use La Roche-Posay Anthelios mineral but I often use Dr. Jart BB cream which has a built in spf. I use La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo for any blemishes or clogged pores.
Do you go to a salon for any type of skincare treatment such as facials, waxing, etc? Any salons, treatments, or beauty technicians you recommend?
I get facials and brow/arm waxes every 3-4 weeks. I like to do a Vitamin C peel when I get a facial-it is super gentle but keeps my skin looking bright and gives it a healthy glow. I have been going to Lisa Adams for almost 7 years. I followed her from John Roberts to her new venture Bijou in Solon. She is also a super talented makeup artist. She is trying to get me to be less of a product junkie and I swear it is impossible to hide stuff from her-she knows just from touching my skin when I have tried a new moisturizer or cleanser or something and she will chew me out!
Do you wear makeup? If so, what are your daily essential products? What special items do you add on for a special occasion?
Of course I do! I LOVE Dr. Jart BB cream for daytime. For a heavier foundation I use either Guerlain Lingerie foundation or Armani Maestro. I cannot live with out my Cle de Peau concealer stick in ivory. I use a Beauty Blender sponge to apply my foundation. I really like Urban Decay’s eye makeup base-it makes shadow last forever. I use MAC mineral face powder and I love my MAC mineral blush. By Terry Rose de Rose is amazing for a liquid blush-it blends easily and gives skin a gorgeous glow. I use a Nars liquid eyeliner and my daytime shadow is usually Stila in Kitten which is the perfect neutral. For evening I sometimes do a smokey eye with Chanel Illusion D’Ombre eyeshadow but I tend to prefer a bright lip and a simple eye with major lashes. I have big blue eyes so I don’t like to overwhelm them with crazy eye shadows. For mascara I love Diorshow or YSL, and I am loving the new YSL Babydoll mascara right now. I use clear Maybelline brow gel to keep unruly brows in check. I love Hourglass Ambient Lighting face powder in luminous light for a healthy glow. By Terry makes the best lipsticks...I have been using their Hyaluronic sheer lipstick in Dragon Pink for a bright special occasion lip. By Terry also makes the most amazing lip balm called Or De Rose. It is completely indulgent and is made with real rose gold and rose petals but it is amazing and lasts forever as a little goes a long way. I also love MAC and YSL for lipstick and everyday lipgloss. I have been using YSL Volupte Sheer Candy in Pomegranate a lot recently for my daytime lip. When I want to use lipliner YSL is my go-to for the smooth texture and great colors. I keep a MAC studio fix compact in my purse for touchups and shine.
Are there any Cleveland makeup artists you've worked with that you recommend?
I used Lisa Adams at Bijou in Solon for my wedding and use her for special occasions sometimes but I really love to do my own makeup. Lisa is fabulous though...she will spend an hour making your skin look flawless before adding any color. Most other makeup artists I have tried use too much eye makeup and don’t put enough effort into making skin look perfect.
Talk to me about your hair. What are your must-have styling and treatment products? Take us through your hair styling routine. Who cuts / styles your hair? Do you color it?
I love Oribe shampoo and conditioner. Oribe also makes the most amazing anti-humidity spray. Everything in the line smells incredible and really works well. Kerastase Fibre Architecte is a must have for heat styling. I find that it really makes a difference in my split ends. I also use a little of Kerastase Elixir Ultime before styling. I blowdry and flatiron my hair most of the time but I will occasionally let my waves dry naturally. I have gotten both the Keratin treatment and Brazilian blowout but I think the Brazilian works much better on my hair. With the Brazilian blowout I can skip the flat iron step or even wear it without styling it which makes life a lot easier! When I can I get my haircut when I am in NYC by Gloria at Oscar Blandi. She is amazing. When I get it cut here in Cleveland Larry at Scott Fisher is great.
Do you wear fragrance? Do you have a signature scent or do you rotate among a few? What are your favorite fragrance notes (ex. vanilla, gardenia etc.)?
I do wear perfume. I rotate among a few. I like really unique stuff and am a bit random when it comes to notes that appeal to me. I love something with gardenia for day but prefer something a bit muskier and sexier for evening. I love scents by Clive Christian and Kilian for special occasions. I believe a woman shouldn’t spray and tell...perfume should be unique to each woman.
I feel like accessories are such a signature part of anyone's look. Do you have certain special items that are essential to your own personal style, such as jewelry, tattoos, handbags, glasses, belts, shoes, even an old pair of jeans or perfect leather jacket?
I do have some coveted special pieces that I adore. I am definitely an Hermes girl. I love Birkin bags and think they are the most gorgeous and well made handbags on the planet. They truly are investment pieces and are meant to be taken care of for the next generation (thankfully I have a daughter). Celine and Balenciaga also make great bags and I adore the kitschy book clutches by Olympia Le Tan. Don’t get me started on shoes. I have the most amazing Alaia leopard print boots with a huge platform that are so comfortable and fabulous (I even wore them when I was 8 months pregnant). I also love Manolo’s and Jimmy Choo biker boots. I have a little Carrie Bradshaw in me apparently. Other than my engagement ring and a wedding band I am not a huge jewelry wearer. I do love a nice watch though-a lady should always be on time!
Looking back to the past, what piece of beauty advice would you give to your younger self?
Drink lots of water, go to bed early, be active, and wear sunscreen. Oh, and alcohol makes you fat so don’t even think about touching it in college or EVER for that matter.
Looking ahead to the future, how do you envision your own personal type of beauty evolving in old age?
I guess I could see myself developing more of a signature look. Right now I have so much fun playing with beauty and fashion but I think when women get older they find what works for them and stick with it. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will age gracefully. I try and take care of myself now so hopefully it will pay off down the road!
If you could only use five beauty products for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Cle de Peau concealer, blush, mascara, my yoga mat, and Aquaphor!
