During the past decade, the American public has been shocked by the massive number of school shooting massacres. The most recent was the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., where lone gunman Adam Lanza, fatally shot twenty children and six adults, before committing suicide by shooting himself in the head as first responders arrived.
The American public is searching for an explanation to a crime that is violent, senseless, unexpected and insidious.
Guns are the common denominator in mass shootings at schools by young male adults, and there is another element that is increasingly minimized.
Over 90 percent of school shootings over the past decade have been linked to a widely prescribed type of antidepressant called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIS, according to British psychiatrist Dr. David Healy, a founder of RxISK.org an independent website for researching and reporting on prescription drugs.
Psychological medications have been “linked to 90 percent of school shootings” and that “It’s likely that problems for Lanza began with “getting tangled up” with psychiatric medicine, said Healy.
In a recent case study of school shooting over the past decade, the drug link has been documented in court records. In shootings carried out by minors, some court documents are sealed and the extent of drug use is unknown to the public.
Listed below are two high-profile cases from the study.
In the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, Eric Harris was taking Luvox, for depression, anger and possessing suicidal thoughts, when he and fellow student Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 24 others before committing suicide.
One public report exists of a friend of Klebold who witnessed him taking the antidepressants Paxil and Zoloft, officially, Klebold’s medical records remain sealed.
At the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, 32 people were shot and killed and 17 others were wounded by lone gunman Seung-Hui Cho, who committed suicide. Authorities found “prescription medications related to the treatment of psychological problems among Mr. Cho’s effects,” According to the New York Times.
Cho had been diagnosed with a severe anxiety disorder known as selective mutism, as well as major depressive disorder from middle school and was prescribed the antidepressant drug Prozac.
One drug found in a number of school shooting cases was Fanapt, one of many drugs the FDA has approved with an ability to exact the opposite desired effect on patients.
The side effects of the drug Fanapt from Drugs.com Psychiatric side effects including restlessness, aggression, and delusion have been reported frequently. Hostility, decreased libido, paranoia, anorgasmia, confusional state, mania, catatonia, mood swings, panic attack, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, delirium, polydipsia psychogenic, impulse-control disorder, and major depression have been reported infrequently.
“Violence and other potentially criminal behavior caused by prescription drugs are medicine’s best kept secret,” Healy said in a statement “Never before in the fields of medicine and law have there been so many events with so much concealed data and so little focused expertise.”
Psychologists, law enforcement, parents, educators, social scientists and religious and political leaders need to take a new open-minded holistic approach to solving the problem of school shooters.
There is an additional method that can be used to gain a better perspective on these complex psychological situations.
By using astrology and examining the charts of the shooting incidents used in the case study titled "Class Avengers" there are several factors these shootings have in common.
In a majority of the charts, one of the classic astrological indicators of violence is at a conjunction or opposition between the Sun and Mars, the planet of aggression.
Mars retrograde was found in a high majority of the charts.
Both Mars and Venus were close to perihelion (the position in its orbit when a planet is closest to the Sun). The Columbine shooting occurred on the day that Venus reached perihelion.
Every one of the charts studied showed at least one aspect between Mars (war, anger), Saturn (structure) and Pluto (power), while a majority showed two or more aspects.
All charts showed a “hard” aspect to the planet Neptune which rules drugs and addiction.
An interesting note is the “malefic” traits associated with the planets Mars, Saturn and Pluto clearly correspond to several characteristics noted in the psychological report.
- The perpetrators had verbalized threats (Mars) prior to the shooting
- They experienced rejection or discipline (Saturn) immediately prior to the incident
- Were known to be highly interested in weapons, military and media violence (Mars)
- Felt victimized (Pluto) prior to the shooting
- Previously expressed suicidal tendencies (Pluto)
- Killed their parents (Saturn)
- They committed suicide (Pluto)
- Wounded or killed school principals or teachers (authorities Saturn)
By taking a holistic approach and adding astrology as a tool for understanding the psychology of the individual and the timing of events, the number of incidents of school shooting can end.
