"Everybody has their own reason for using a [personal] trainer. Besides executing techniques safely, [personal training] is about education and accountability. [A personal trainer provides] guidance, proper form and function, motivation, and helps to shake up some old routines. You may not always need a trainer, but everyone can benefit from a trainer from time to time."
Ryan Canon, ISSA certified personal trainer and fitness nutrition student, enjoys teaching and sharing his knowledge of fitness and exercise. As a youth, he began his enthusiasm for physical activity with sports like soccer, baseball, football, basketball, and track, focusing on mobility and functionality. "In high school it became an addiction to be in the weight room or on the track running." After a few desk jobs, Ryan knew he needed to get away from the computer and back to the real world.
Ryan prides himself on the fact that he gives personal attention and focus to each and every client. "I am available 24/7 to my clients. Anything they need help with they can contact me. [For me] this isn't exactly a nine to five job. Life doesn't take breaks and neither do I."
Currently, Ryan works for Guiding Fitness located in Lincoln, California - a personalized fitness studio that offers individual training, small group training, and group fitness classes. "Great owners, great team, great environment - but most of all, [the crew at Guiding Fitness focuses on] personal relationships and caring for all of our members. And that makes a difference." Ryan, and other team members, work to create a fun and focused environment for clients. "We have to enjoy the things we do each day, but we can't slack off either. There's work to be done."
Each client has different needs based on their personal goals. Ryan recommends seeing a personal trainer 3-5 times per week to get on track. His workouts combine resistance training and cardio (aerobic) training. "I prefer circuits with short rest periods." When working with clients, listening is a key factor for Ryan. "listening to my clients and understanding their needs means that I can create an effective program to make sure they reach their goals." Staying educated and keeping up to date in an ever changing fitness world is another important aspect he believes makes a good personal trainer. And safety! "Clients come in for all sorts of reasons, but the one thing everybody has in common is that they all need to learn safe and correct exercise techniques. [Sending clients] home safe and healthy is my #1 concern."
In a world full of exercise gimmicks and the latest fitness craze changing every month, Ryan's best advice is to "do your research before wasting your hard earned money. Fads are bust. In most cases, even programs that have some validity or produce results can be miss leading." Ryan's recommended piece of fitness equiptment is a foam roller. "By far the most bang for your buck, and it makes you feel so free and refreshed when your done rolling. It helps [improve] flexibility and [reduce] tension that stresses the body. I feel that my recovery times have shortened since using one." When it comes to quality exercises, Ryan loves the basics. "No matter how good you become, you can't skip squats, pushups, or pullups. They hit almost every inch of the body and can be modified for any level."
Looking down the road, Ryan plans to purse a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology, and wants to become more involved with younger atheletes and other kids. "[I want to work with kids and help them] to be properly educated to make great life choices."
Session prices with Ryan are $44/hour, or $22/half hour, or $15-30 for small groups.
