With a powerful team roster assembled, Head Coach David Macpherson's San Diego Aviators may well be a contender for the Mylan World Team Tennis championship this year. Being an ex-touring pro with 16 doubles titles to his name and coaching the world no.1 doubles team Bryan Brothers certainly lends credibility to the Australian's ability to coach champions. The Bryan Brothers, together with Top 30 WTA player Daniela Hantuchova were joined by Kveta Peschke, Raven Klaasen, and Somdev Devvarman as the Aviators completed their roster for 2014. While the team's sheer tennis power is likely to make them a contender for the 2014 Championship, it's the Bryan Brother's style and personality that is guaranteed to demonstrate that tennis is fun for Southern California fans.
The San Diego Aviators drafted world No. 9 ranked female doubles player, Kveta Peschke; ATP male doubles No. 30, Raven Klaasen; and Somdev Devvarman, ATP male singles No. 78 in the Mylan World Team Tennis draft at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden earlier this month.
With first pick in the draft, the Aviators selected Devvarman, current No. 1 tennis player in India and top 100 ATP singles player. He has made his name in the ATP World Tour by reaching the finals of the Chennai Open, is the 2010 Asian Games singles and doubles champion and a two-time NCAA singles champion.
Originally from South Africa, Klaasen was drafted in the second round. He has four ATP doubles titles and has the notable achievement of reaching the Australian Open Doubles Finals in January.
In the final round, the Aviators drafted the Czech Republic native, Peschke, with an impressive record of 26 WTA doubles titles and former World No. 1 ranking in doubles.
The head coach of the Aviators, David Macpherson and General Manager Shelly Hall were pleased to add Peschke, Klaasen and Devvarman to the team that already includes world No. 1 doubles sensation, Mike and Bob Bryan, and five-time Grand Slam champion, Daniela Hantuchova.
“Our team is shaping into one of the strongest teams in the league. We are committed to bringing San Diego world-class tennis and our roster is reflective of that,” said Russell Geyser, owner of the Aviators.
Macpherson, a product of renowned Tony Roche's junior tennis academy, turned professional in 1985. As a junior player Macpherson was one of Australia's top prospects in his peer group, reaching the U.S. Open Junior Doubles Tournament finals in 1983 and winning the Australia Open Junior Doubles title in 1985 (with Brett Custer). During his career, Macpherson captured 16 doubles titles on the ATP tour. Throughout his pro career, Macpherson was a regular player in World Team Tennis league for the Sacramento and Kansas City Explorers franchises.
The Aviators will hold seven home matches at the Valley View Casino Center (formerly the San Diego Sports Arena) and seven matches on the road, July 6-27. Season tickets for the seven San Diego home matches are on sale now.
Other notable Mylan WTT players include Andy Roddick, Vera Zvonareva, Victoria Azarenka, Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Martina Hingis, James Blake, John Isner, the Bryan Brothers and others. It is a unique opportunity for tennis fans to not only see the greatest athletes in tennis complete, but it is also a high-energy and enthusiastic viewing experience.
The Aviators were recently purchased by local businessman, Russell Geyser, and join the other six Mylan WTT teams in Boston; Springfield, Mo.; Philadelphia; Austin; Irving, Texas; and Washington, D.C.
