Maybe we can have our automotive cake and eat it, too! Ford officials say their 2011 Mustang powered by the all-new 3.7 liter V-6 has achieved something no other vehicle has ever before done - compiling an official 31 mpg highway rating from the EPA with a powerplant producing at least 300 horsepower.
Actually, the new Ford V-6 is rated at 305 horsepower, which puts it right in the fight with Camaro's standard 304 horsepower 3.4 liter V-6.
The city EPA figure for the Mustang six is 19 mpg. Both figures are for the Mustang with the six-speed automatic transmission, not the stick shift.
Ford describes the V-6 as "a lightweight, all-aluminum 3.7-liter dual-overhead-cam (DOHC) V-6 engine that uses advanced engineering to deliver its combination of power and economy. Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) adjusts the valvetrain in microseconds depending on driver inputs, further contributing to the engine’s overall efficiency."
“Advanced powertrains like our Ti-VCT V-6 and six-speed automatic really speak to the future of Mustang,” said Barb Samardzich, Ford vice president of Global Powertrain Engineering. “We’ve proven that, using technology, Ford can deliver both power and fuel economy.”

I'll believe it when I see a real person on a real road duplicate those numbers.
Jeff, I routinely get at least 10% higher mileage than the EPA highway rating for my car. My commute is essentially rural highway and four lane controlled access freeway. It all depends upon your lifestyle.
Do you think in 20 years they will be saying them same thing about 4 cylinders, or will be all be riding in electric golf carts and buses?
I get about 26-28 mph highway in my '07 V6 Mustang with the A/C off and the cruise control on.
So I don't think 30 sounds all that unreasonable.
I'd like to shoe-horn that new engine in to my 1999 Ford Explorer. Boost my power and gas mileage in one blow!
I absolutely believe those numbers. I routinely recorded 25 mpg on the freeway in my 2005 Mustang GT V8. That's right the V8. I drove it cross-country a few years ago and averaged 26 mpg for the trip. It was unbelievable. I used to drop the hammer on it quite a bit in the city, but still managed around 17 mpg usually. The same cross country trip in my wife's Toyota Sienna AWD only garnered around 19-20 mpg.
