Prodigal child Mount de Sales returns home for first time since 1980

When Mount de Sales takes the field against St. Anne Pacelli in two weeks, it will mark the first time that a person named Garvin or Slocum would not be roaming the sidelines. With Keith Hatcher at the helm and the Cavaliers will play a GHSA opponent in football since 1980.

The Cavalier athletic progam returned to the GHSA after a 34-year hiatus in the GISA, where they did manage to find some success, taking home a state football title in 1996 and winning other state titles while a member of the association that was first known as the SEAIS.

MDS did play its first GHSA event last week at home, a volleyball match at McAuley Hall on campus last Thursday afternoon, where they took Perry to task, winning two out of three games.

There were some that questioned the moves of then-athletic director Mike Garvin as some wanted to stay in the GHSA. Those people later came around to his thinking and celebrated the years of success and that success can be seen on the wall at McAuley Hall.

Some background and some events that took place in 1980, Mount de Sales' last year in the GHSA...

In the world of sports, the Atlanta Falcons won the NFC West (yes, that's right... the Falcons were in the NFC West, which made as much sense as a screendoor on a submarine), lost to Dallas in the first round of the playoffs. The Super Bowl winner that year? Oakland, who beat Philadelphia.

Georgia was the number one team in College Football that year going undefeated, beating Notre Dame (who played Georgia Tech to a tie) in the Sugar Bowl. A fellow named Walker won the Heisman that year.

Genuine Risk won the Kentucky Derby that year but did not win the Triple Crown, Philadelphia beat Kansas City to win the World Series, the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA title.

1980 was also the "Miracle on Ice" in Lake Placid, the New York Islanders won the Stanley Cup, Seve Ballesteros took home the Green Jacke and MDS won the 1980 Class A state baseball title, sweeping Cave Spring in a best-of-3 series; MDS football advanced to the state quarterfinals in football before losing to Johnson County in the second round.

There was no Facebook, Twitter or MySpace in 1980. The cell phone was still an idea in its infancy at best and social media was face to face conversations with the person you wanted to talk to.

The move was a long time in coming and many were not sure if it was going to take place. Some were taking a "wait and see" attitude to see if they, along with Stratford and Tattnall Square were going to move, this coming on the heels of First Presbyterian Day departing. In the end, not only did Mount de Sales leave, Tattnall and Stratford followed as well.

When Mount de Sales kicks off its 2014 football season in two weeks in Columbus, the circle will be complete. The prodigal child has come home and hopefully there will be rings to place on its fingers and a fatted calf in the form of state championships. Some say that MDS will struggle in some sports, while others contend that they will stay the course and do even better in their new league.

34 years. 6 presidents (Carter, Reagan, GHW Bush, Clinton, GW Bush and Obama) have been in the Oval Office,, three men (John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis) have occupied the chair of St. Peter at the Vatican since the time Mount de Sales left the GHSA and returned.

The prodigal child has returned. Let's hope that they get their fair share of rings to put on their fingers and eat as many fatted calves as possible.
