The Animal Health division of pharmaceutical giant, Novartis, has warned veterinarians of a "rare possibility" that 30-count bottles of Clomicalm® (clomipramine hydrochloride) tablets may be contaminated with other medication.
The company explained that packaging errors may have occurred at a manufacturing facility. No reports of adverse events have been reported in dogs treated with Clomicalm, which is used to treat canine separation anxiety.
Novartis has not implemented a recall, but has advised caution, suggesting that veterinarians check bottles before dispensing from current stock and alert clients to check for broken tablets or odd or incorrect tablets in bottles of Clomicalm.
Novartis has suspended production and shipment of the following veterinary products:
- Interceptor Flavor Tabs
- Sentinel Flavor Tabs,
- Clomicalm, Program Tablets and Suspension, and
- Milbemite.
Production of Deramaxx has also been halted, but will continue to ship from existing inventory. People with companion animals are nervous about running out of important medications because Rick Lloyd, General Manager of Novartis Animal Health has given no indication as to when or if production will resume.
If you treat your dog with any of the medications listed, check with your veterinarian for lot numbers affected.
Last month, Novartis announced the voluntary recall of its leading human products, which includes Excedrin, NoDoz, Bufferin and Gax-X.
