On Oct. 11, 2013 during "Magic: The Gathering" Pro Tour "Theros" in Dublin, Ireland Zac Hill spoke with John Larkin about his mono red devotion deck. Larkin's deck has only a couple differences from the list that Philip Bertorelli piloted to a first place victory at the StarCityGames.com Standard Open in Worcester, Mass. just two weeks ago. Players are still diving into new cards from "Theros," and the updated list adds several additional cards from Wizards of the Coast's latest expert expansion set.
Key changes include dropping a copy of Boros Reckoner, Fanatic of Mogis, and the lone Ghore-House Chainwalker in order to support a full playset of Mutavault instead. This lowers the mana curve slightly while also increasing the land count by one. Mutavault is a pivotal card against control decks, surviving board sweepers like Supreme Judgment and can also raising the threat density as a whole. Larkin also eschews Magma Jet in favor of adding another aggressive one drop: Firedrinker Satry. To help compensate, the Shock count is upped to four.
There's also a few shakeups to the sideboard. You'll notice the complete lack of Burning Earth from the previous list. New additions include Act of Treason to deal with the mono green decks and Skullcrack to help combat Sphinx's Revelation in the control matchup.
Larkin's deck is brutally fast, and variations of it will no doubt be making appearances at your local FNM events in the months to come.
