Every poker players’ favorite politician, Barney Frank (D-MA) is facing one of his toughest reelection campaigns since becoming a US Congressman some 30 years ago. Frank is a something of a cult hero in the poker world thanks to his initiatives to legalize and regulate online poker, most recently with the introduction of HR 2267, which still has a slight chance of passing in the upcoming ‘Lame-Duck Session’ of Congress.
Frank recently loaned his campaign $200,000 of his own personal money in order to fight any late attack ads that may come from his opponent or independent 527 groups. Frank still holds a comfortable, but closer than expected 13 point lead in the polls, over his Republican challenger Sean Bielat.
Frank has long been one of the most vocal critics of UIGEA legislation, and is a darling of the Poker Players Alliance. The loss of Frank in the US Congress would spell disaster for online poker legislation in the US.
