The following is a list and comparison of the prize money for the four major tournaments in golf in 2014. The four majors are The Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and the PGA Championship.

As you can see below, the prize money does vary from major to major. In general, the majors do offer the most prize money on the PGA Tour and in golf annually.

I've listed the total amount of prize money for each major in 2014, plus the winner's share at each major and also listed the percentage increases at each major from 2013. As you can also see, the prize money has been raised by a lot of money at each of the four majors in golf in 2014.

The Masters - $9 million total prize money

The Masters total prize money was increased by a whopping $1 million this year from $8 million in 2013 to $9 million in 2014. That is a 12.5% increase.

  • Bubba Watson Winner - $1.620 million

Bubba Watson earned $1.620 million by winning The Masters in 2014. That was also an increase of 12.5% over the $1.44 million that Adam Scott earned by winning The Masters in 2013.

U.S. Open - $9 million

Like The Masters, the U.S. Open also increased its total prize fund from $8 million to $9 million (12.5%) this year.

  • Martin Kaymer Winner - $1.620

Martin Kaymer earned $1.620 with his run away win at the 2014 U.S. Open. That 12.5% above the $1.44 million that Justin Rose earned by winning the 2013 U.S. Open.

British Open - $9.226 million

The British Open increased its prize money by 15.1% this year, from $8.016 million in 2013 to $9.226 million in 2014.

  • Rory McIlroy Winner - $1.67 million

Rory McIlroy earned a cool $1.67 million with his wire-to-wire win this year at the British Open. That was an increase of 15.7% over the $1.443 million Phil Mickelson earned with his 2013 British Open win.

PGA Championship - $10 million

The PGA Championship raised its prize money fund by a whopping 25% this year from $8 million in 2013 to $10 million in 2014. The PGA Championship is now tied with the Players Championship for the biggest prize pool in golf in 2014.

  • Rory McIlroy Winner - $1.8 million

Rory McIlroy earned an even cooler $1.8 million when he won the PGA Championship in 2014. That is a massive increase of 24.6% above the $1.445 million that Jason Dufner earned when he won the PGA Championship in 2013.

Rory McIlroy has now won four majors and he joins Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Bobby Jones as the youngest players to reach four majors. That's pretty good company and bodes well for Rory McIlroy's future in golf.
