Private jungle retreat in Mexico ideal for family gatherings

The Casa at Taninah

What began as one family’s weekend getaway has turned into a private jungle retreat near Playa del Carmen rented to only one group at a time.

Husband and wife, Marino and Kathy lived in Playa del Carmen and decided to find property in the Mexican jungle to create their own family retreat. Marino mentioned to a friend he was looking for land and the friend just happened to have another friend looking to sell. At the time the area was pure virgin forest and they took a leap of faith and bought the property sight unseen.

After developing the 10-acre property in stages starting in 1999, Kathy and Marino decided to turn the family home into a business in 2003. Today Taninah has five palapas that can house up to 35 guests for a weekly rental. The screened-in structures can accommodate at least four people (although there is only one bathroom per building). According to Marino the typical guest is a multi-generational family celebrating a big event, or multiple couples and their children on vacation.

Taninah is an unusual proposition, near the typical hotels, condos and all-inclusive properties of Playa del Carmen and Cancun, but a world away in terms of philosophy and relaxation.  Located in the heart of the jungle, the property is the antithesis of a luxury resort or an all-inclusive. It will appeal to families looking to bond over sports, games, and hanging out together. While it’s a far cry from camping, guests should be aware that the buildings have screens for walls (like many African Safari accomodations), the toilets aren’t the flush variety (they’re composting) and that animals, both domestic (dog and cats) and wild (birds) roam the property.

“We don’t compete with the all-inclusive,” said Marino. “We resonate with people who want an experience out of the norm. We’re not for everyone.”

The highlight of Taninah is its large cenote. This underground cave is filled with water and provides a perfect swimming hole.

While Taninah is isolated, it’s close enough to enjoy the typical Mexican tourist delights. The closest beach is a small, beautiful stretch of sand about four miles away. Excursions can be arranged to snorkel, dive, fish or go on an ATV adventure.

During the week, a staff of ten Mayan men will cater to your groups needs.

The standard package at Taninah covers a Saturday to Saturday stay for ten people and includes three meals a day and airport transfers. The cost is $13,650. Additional people can be added for $98/person per day. Children under six are free.  Reservations are made online.
