As part of the Austin Climate Protection Plan, enacted by a City Council resolution in 2007, the Austin Climate Protection Program presents, the Austin Climate Protection Conference and Expo, a two-day event featuring national and local experts in the energy, transportation, green building, and public policy fields, January 15–16, at the Palmer Events Center, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Attendees of the expo can partake in the AltCar & AltBuild program that includes a free ride around the test-drive course in the all-new, third-generation 2010 Toyota Prius. With Combined EPA estimated fuel efficiency rating of 50 miles-per-gallon, the Prius will be equipped with advanced standard and available features such as a moonroof with solar panels, four driving modes, Intelligent Parking Assist (IPA) and steering wheel touch controls that display on the instrument panel.
Free and open to the public, the event will showcase the new Austin Carbon Footprint Calculator, an innovative tool that allows users to calculate their carbon output based on daily activities like driving habits, diet, energy use, and recycling practices. The calculator has the option of automatically uploading your Austin Energy utility use from your bill statement for the most accurate results.
Located at www.coolaustin.org/co2_footprint.htm, the online tool also compares users’ results to Austin averages as well as cities around the world, and offers
specific steps and resources for reducing their carbon output. It is an important way to educate businesses and individuals on sustainability and conservation.
Other activities include Texas Gas Service programs, alternative transportation technologies, renewable energy, green building products, water conservation products, urban planning, mass transportation, and much more.
Saturday sessions, (open to the general public) will focus on topics such as energy rebates, climate change, and green building.
