Union Minister of State in the Indian Prime Minister's office, Prithviraj Chavan, has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Chavan replaces Ashok Chavan after the former resigned over his role in the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society scam.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced Prithviraj Chavan's name early Wednesday morning. Three names were considered for the post - Prithviraj Chavan, Mukul Wasnik and Balasaheb Thorat.
In the union cabinet, Prithviraj Chavan has handled key assignments and he played an important part in the Indo-US nuclear deal.
Chagan Bhijbal was replaced as Dty CM by Ajit Pawar of the NCP.
