The Innocence Project's blog reports Washington Governor Jay Inslee announced on Tuesday that he was implementing a moratorium on the death penalty.

Inlsee reached his decision after months of review and of talking with family members of victims, prosecutors and law enforcement, according to the Associated Press. The AP also reported that, at a press conference, Inslee said, “There have been too many doubts raised about capital punishment, there are too many flaws in this system today. . . . There is too much at stake to accept an imperfect system.”

Governor Inslee will issue a reprieve to all death penalty cases that come across his desk, without the intention of commuting sentences or pardoning those sentenced to death. Nine men awaiting execution at the Washington State Penitentiary will be saved from being executed.
