Nancy Gonzalez, a New York prison guard accused of having sexual relations with an inmate has given birth to a son, AP reported Friday.
Gonzalez was charged in February with having an unlawful sexual relationship with inmate Ronell Wilson, who killed two police officers, while working at a federal detention center in Brooklyn. Gonzalez became pregnant in June, a few months into the affair, according to court papers.
Wilson was convicted of shooting the two cops point blank and was originally sentenced to death. However, in an appeal, the sentence was revoked. He awaits a resentencing.
When Gonzalez was arrested in February, Assistant U.S. Attorney Celia Cohen asked the judge to order Gonzalez to undergo a substance abuse evaluation as part of her bail condition. She had been using the drug cocaine while she was pregnant.
Gonzalez, 29, pleaded not guilty to the indictment charging her with having sexual intercourse with Wilson at the Brooklyn jail. However, her attorney Anthony Ricco said he anticipates she will plead guilty when she goes back to court now that she has given birth to her son.
She faces up to 15 years in prison, but Gonzalez will seek leniency due to abuse she has suffered in her life including a sexual assault while serving in the military.
Asked if she had decided on a name for the boy, Ricco said "Not Ronell," then quickly added he was only kidding.
