Prison for starving girl: ‘Stupid dad’ gets 5 years for starved daughter

Prison for starving girl is the major headline on Thursday, and here’s why. A 42-year-old father of a teenage girl has been sentenced to five years behind bars for neglect, as a judge believes the father buried his head “in the sand” when it came to the welfare of his daughter.

The teenage girl, who the judge believes does suffer from some emotional problems, is said to have lost so much weight that she weighed just 68 pounds.

The father, himself a trucker, stood in court and, with a shaking voice, suggested that his neglect was not done intentionally.

“There was no master plan against my daughter,” the man said, his voice quivering. “I was bailing water from a sinking boat with my bare hands.”

The judge, however, wasn’t so willing to accept the father’s excuse at face value. While certainly acknowledging that this dad had a lot on his plate, the judge said the following in court:

“What I think you did was put your head in the sand. It’s your job as a dad to see it and you didn’t. Really, the buck stops with you,” said the judge.

In a written letter to the judge, the dad’s own teenage daughter wrote her thoughts down on paper. The young girl, whose name will be omitted as well as the father to protect the teen’s identity, says that her dad not only made her dehumanized, but that his actions were downright disrespectful and “stupid.”

“It’s all thanks to my stupid dad and stepmom for not giving me an education and keeping me locked up for most of my life and making me feel like I was in a scary spot in my life.”
