Prison for starving girl: Father gets 5 years for abusing daughter

A father in Wisconsin will be sent to prison for starving a girl for so long she plummeted down to weigh just 68 pounds. ABC News shared the details on Jan. 29.

The man told the court that the situation had become one where he was “bailing water from a sinking boat with my bare hands.” The girl supposedly had behavioral and emotional problems, and the man said he had “no master plan” against the girl, his daughter.

After enduring multiple types of abuse, the then 15-year-old managed to run away from her home. A passing motorist picked her up, and as she met with authorities she detailed the horrific abuse she endured at the hands of her family members.

The girl was locked up in her family's basement for years, she has said, denied food much of the time. She has also said she was beaten by her stepmother and she says her stepbrother sexually molested her. The teen also was forced to drink her own urine and eat her feces.

The stepmother in the case has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading no contest to causing mental harm to a child and reckless endangerment. The stepbrother's trial on sexual assault charges begins in February. The father has now gone through two trials, as the jury deadlocked in March on some of the charges against him.

The man will go to prison for starving the girl, and he was convicted of child abuse, causing mental harm to a child, reckless endangerment and child neglect. Though he faced 28 years in prison, ultimately he was sentenced to five years in prison. The judge, Dane County Circuit Judge Julie Genovese, said that both the mother and father stole five years from the girl's life keeping her locked in the basement, thus they both deserved five years in prison for starving the girl.
