PrintMatters is pleased to present Rockin' Rollin' Prints, a one-day steam roller printmaking event at Art Supply on Main Street. This event is part of PRINTHOUSTON 2011, Houston’s first print event dedicated to celebrating the art of printmaking and print collecting in Houston.
Texas artists will line up to get their large-scale woodcuts inked and then printed under the drum of a three-ton steamroller or under the feet of dancers from Sandra Organ’s troupe Earthen Vessels, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Viewers will be urged to cheer on the dancers as they move their bodies and feet across the paper, printing the inked woodcut underneath. This year’s theme is “the seven deadly sins.”
A silent auction of the steamroller prints will be held throughout the day. All bidding will end at 4:15 p.m. Prints will be available for pick-up June 18th at Art Supply.
Paper has been donated by Canson Fine Art Products and ink has been supplied by Gamblin Artists Oil Colors. Event parnters include Art Supply on Main, Community Artists’ Collective, and Midtown Management District.
ROCKIN’ ROLLIN’ PRINTS is open to the public.
SPECIAL GUESTS:
Artists from throughout the state have been encouraged to participate. Several have asked to join our event. We are excited to include anyone who wants to educate the public about printmaking. Here are our “special guests” as of April 26.
Ryan O’Malley and Joseph Velasquez, the artists of Drive-By Press, will be printing from the back of their van. They have traveled over 250,000 miles spreading their style of guerilla art making. Each design is hand-cut into a piece of wood then custom printed. For a small fee, participants will be invited to collaborate with the artists in the selection and placement of the design, creating a one-of-a-kind poster or T-shirt printed especially for them.
Xenia Fedorchenko, Lamar University printmaking professor, Tim Robtoy, and their Monstercise!crew will print “monsters” assembled from a multitude of carved linoleum blocks. The blocks consist of images of various appendages, heads, and torsos of beings real and imagined. From this truly collaborative and interactive exercise, the public will walk away with a unique Monstercised! print.
Hans Molzberger, internationally acclaimed artist and visiting artist at Houston Baptist University, will leave behind two recently carved woodblocks from his new series “My Pilot Life” while he flies back to Germany for the summer. Burning Bone’s master printer Pat Masterson will edition the blocks, which will be part of Molzberger’s upcoming exhibitions.
The grand finale of the day will be guest artist Lynne Hubner, printmaker and teacher from McKinney, Texas. We will use Gamblins’ new line of inks and drive the steamroller over multiple blocks to produce a multi-color print.
