Do you need a fun way to drill your students in multiplication and short division? Here is the answer.
Involve your students in a math game for kids called ‘Math Lollipop Olympics’. You could also call it the ‘Multiplication and Short Division Race’ where everyone comes out the winner as long as they complete the drill.
The students will work with a number of your choosing. For this lesson, you will choose the number 22.
Beginning with the number 22, the students will work eight multiplication problems. The final product will become the initial dividend for the eight short division problems they will work next. The cool thing about the drill is that if they work all sixteen math problems correctly, they will begin and end with the same number.
To make the whole process easier, you get a free printable worksheet most appropriate for grades 3 to 6. You also get an answer key and an example page to demonstrate how the end result should look.
Page 1 – Multiplication & Short Division Worksheet working with the number 22
Make one copy of this worksheet for each student. The students will write their name on their worksheet. Using a pencil with a good eraser, they will fill in the blanks with the appropriate products and quotients.
Page 2 – Answer Key for the Teachers
Make one copy of the answer key to use to check the students’ work.
You might want to give the students the option to visit you at your desk if they wish you to check their work at any point in the process. If they have made a mistake, they need to erase and begin again.
Alternatively, some students may wish to wait to check their work when they are completely done working all sixteen math problems.
Page 3 – Example page for Students working with the number 1
Make one copy for every pair of students. They can use this as reference material to help them understand how the end result should look.
For this example page, the target beginning and ending number is number 1. Naturally, their products and quotients will be different to fit the target number you have selected.
