Paramount Pictures has announced that principal photography has commenced on the sequel to J.J. Abrams' hit 2009 "Star Trek" relaunch. The sequel, which still doesn't officially have a title, but is being widely referred to as "Star Trek 2," is scheduled for release on May 17, 2013. (The first sequel to "Star Trek the Motion Picture" was called "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," but of course that was a Roman numeral...)
The sequel, whatever it ends being called, is being shot in 2D but will be post-converted to 3D for release.
Based upon "Star Trek" created by Gene Roddenberry, the film is produced by J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The script was written by Alex Kurtzman & Robert Orci & Damon Lindelof. 2009 "Star Trek" cast members John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoë Saldana, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin are joined by Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
Michael Giacchino returns to score the sequel, good news for fans.
On Location Vacations reports that the movie is shooting at the Sony Studios Studio complex, and will also utilize the Paramount lot, in addition to undisclosed locations. Principal photography is expected to take 13 weeks.
