This weekend at Princeton features music, art and theater with holiday flair that includes an outdoor a capella concert and a global bazaar.
Be prepared to bundle up if you'll be out and about. Nightime temperatures will drop below the freezing point all three nights, but the sun will shine all weekend. Friday daytime temperatures will be in the 50's, but in the 40's during the day on Saturday and Sunday.
The Princeton Art Museum is also open all weekend and is currently featuring a delightful array of exhibits that include offbeat black and white photography, Edwardian masterpieces, medieval and contemporary art and Japanese collective art. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
FRIDAY, DEC. 9
A Capella Holiday Concert at Palmer Square to collect toys and other goods to support economically struggling families. 6:30 p.m. Palmer Square. Free.
The a capella sounds of Princeton's acclaimed choral groups will be joined by a capella singers from Princeton High School and Hopewell Valley Central High School for a holiday musical jam session beside the Palmer Square Holiday Tree, serenading shoppers and diners out for the evening. The concert is free but listeners are encouraged to bring a new toy for the YMCA Princeton St. Nicholas Project, which helps parents provide holiday gifts for their children. Non-toy donations are also being accepted. JaZams toy shop in Palmer Square is collecting the toys. Any toy for the drive purchased from the shop will receive a 20 percent discount from now until Dec. 11, according to a university spokesperson. Complimentary hot chocolate and cider is being provided by Chez Alice.
The singers are part of some of the oldest university singing ensembles in the country, and have performed internationally. They include the Princeton University Tigressions, Princeton University Band, Tigertones, Nassoons, Wildcats, Kindred Spirit, Tigerlilies, Katzenjammers, Footnotes, Old NasSoul and Koleinu. Cloud Nine from Princeton High School and Con Brio from Hopewell Valley Central High School joins them. The event is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Palmer Square Management and JaZams., and it is part of the university's Office of Community and Regional Affairs' Holiday Gift Outreach Initiative.

Hobart Earle, Guest Conductor, will lead the Princeton University Orchestra in Edvard Grieg's Music from 'Peer Gynt' Satie, Gymnopedies, and Brahms, Symphony No. 3. Earle, a 1983 Princeton graduate, is in his 19th season as music director and principal conductor of the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra, and brought the Ukranian orchestra to a position of international prominence, unprecedented in the history of the organization. He has led hundreds of concerts with the Odessa Philharmonic to wide acclaim in major international concert halls that include Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, France, Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria, Russia and the Ukraine. Highlights of his career include performances at the Musikverein (Vienna), the Philharmonie (Cologne), the Beethovenhalle (Bonn), the Barbican Hall (London), the National Auditorium (Madrid), the Liszt Academy (Budapest) the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and at the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society. In the U.S., he has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Davies Hall in San Francisco and the General Assembly of the United Nations. ''Emerge!'' is the 5th annual global bazaar featuring an international collection of artisan crafts from more than 20 countries. It is sponored by the Princeton Art Museum and unites the university's development initiatives in regions around the world.
