HRH Crown Princess Victoria has given birth to the next heir to the throne of Sweden, her first child, a baby girl. The announcement came at 7am Stockholm time, via HRH Prince Daniel. He stated in the press conference that the "very cute Princess" was resting on her mother and appeared healthy and doing very well. The Marshall of the Realm followed immediately after with the official statement of the Royal Court:
"Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 04:26 gave birth to a daughter.
Both mother and child are doing well."
The Princess' name will be announced tomorrow, by HM King Carl XVI Gustaf, to a special meeting of the cabinet. It is then we will know what the titles are for the new baby royal as well. The Prince stated that he was "nervous" because there is always "risks with a birth" - but he felt it went very well and everyone is healthy and happy. He also thanked the hospital for the care that his family had received. Daniel also took the opportunity to ask the gathered press for some privacy:
"As I am sure you can all understand, we have a great need just to be our own little family right now. You understand that surely, that we want to treasure what has just happened."
The birth is an enormous news story in Sweden, the baby is second in the line of succession and the country hasn’t celebrated a royal birth since 1982. HRH Crown Princess Victoria is the first woman to be an heir apparent to a European throne. All other women before her have been heiress presumptive. Now, she will pass the throne down her bloodline to her first born child. HRH Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel married in June, 2010 then announced the pregnancy in August of that same year. The Princess had made it clear she wanted children and that starting a family was very important to her.
