Princess on trial for accusations of detainee torture (Video)

A princess is on trial for torturing two doctors, and she faces separate charges for assaulting an activist. The princess in question is Sheikha Noura bint Ibrahim al-Khalifa, a princess in Bahrain who is also a police officer. Reuters via Yahoo News shared the details on Jan. 30.

The charges against the princess on trial is that Sheikha Noura bint Ibrahim al-Khalifa tortured two doctors to force a confession out of them. This happened in March and April 2011 during political unrest in the area. She is denying all of the charges against her. The torture trial involves two doctors making the accusations, and Sheikha Noura, 29, is facing a separate trial where she is accused of assaulting a female opposition activist.

The princess on trial is facing hearings on both cases again in early February. The trial involving the doctors began in June 2012, while the trial involving the young protestor began in October 2012. A number of health professionals and protestors found themselves jailed and facing trials after the 2011 political unrest in the area, but most of them have appealed and been released.
