TRH Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary are continuing their visit to Australia in Canberra, where they met with Prime Minister Julia Gillard today. The group shared an official lunch and welcoming ceremony. Both the Prime Minister and the Crown Prince gave speeches highlighting a shared focus on the issue of climate change. The Prime Minister’s remarks also focused on the romance of the royal couple, stating,
“There were no carriages or castles in Sydney – this was a distinctly 21st century romance, meeting first amid the delights of the big city, exchanging thoughts by email and flying back and forth by jumbo jets. In any case, fairytales exist only in story books, because being royalty in these democratic times means hard work.”
Frederik and Mary then continued on with a visit to the National Gallery. At the museum, the Princess got to see a portrait of herself done by artist Jaiwei Shen. The couple’s official six-day visit is about half over, it still includes stops in Melbourne, Victoria, and New South Wales. Following their public visit, the couple will be spending some private time with Mary’s family. This is the first time since 2008 that they have been down under as a couple.
