HRH Prince Carl Philip and his girlfriend Sofia Hellqvist have been dating since late 2009 and the relationship has been certainly controversial. Sofia is a former reality show participant, has done semi-nude modeling, and is generally not typical “royal-material”. However, it has been clear that the Prince is determined to have his family accept his, now live-in, love. His commitment appears to have been working; TM King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia invited Sofia to spend time with the family in the French Riviera, reportedly leaving HRH Princess Madeleine as the last approval hold out. Madeleine remains extremely close with the Prince’s longtime girlfriend Emma Pernald and in the past had lobbied for a reconciliation, which makes the current situation more difficult. Interestingly enough the Swedish Royal Court has officially commented on the topic to Expressen:
“I've spoken with Princess Madeleine about Sofia Hellqvist, and she was clear that they have a good relationship with each other. Given that the Princess lives in New York, she doesn’t have many opportunities to meet with Sofia, but when they do, they get along well.”
There has been recent comment on the other side of the coin as well. When entering a museum in Stockholm with the Prince, she commented “We get along well with each other. I think Madeleine is a strong and wonderful person.” HRH Prince Carl Philip appears to have gone “all in” with his relationship with Sofia, but will it lead to marriage? Only time will tell.
